Fishery Notice

If you're going fishing this upcoming BC Day long weekend, plan ahead! For 
details on obtaining your tidal water sports fishing licence, see below.

Is your area open to fishing? - What are the catch limits?

Before you get your licence - please note that there are salmon and other 
fishery closures in effect in numerous areas of BC's tidal waters. For the 
latest details on openings and closures in your area: 

A) call 1-866-431-FISH or 604-666-2828 (24-hour phone line); Or 
B) visit our web page 'Sport Fishing Guide - British Columbia' for current 
regulations and restrictions in your proposed fishing area at

Getting your licence online:
----------------------------
You may get your electronically issued licence 24 hours a day, 7 days a week 
through our National Recreational Licensing System (NRLS). Licences can be 
purchased via any computer connected to the internet; link to www.pac.dfo-
mpo.gc.ca/sportfish or search by using internet search key words 'Recfish 
Licence.' Once you register, you will be able purchase a licence or reprint a 
lost licence through NRLS. In addition you are able to voluntarily record your 
catch in NRLS for chinook salmon, halibut and lingcod; when you reprint your 
licence, catch details will then print to your licence document. To obtain your 
licence through NRLS you will to be able to pay by credit card or by Interac 
(if supported by your bank or credit union). To print your licence your 
computer must have Adobe Reader and be connected to a printer. 

To avoid system delays, the best time to access NRLS is outside of peak 
periods. Peak periods are every day from 12-3pm; every Friday, Saturday, and 
Sunday; and anytime there is a major fishery opening, as for example on the 
Fraser river.

Getting your licence from an Independent Access Provider:

Licences can also be purchased at select public access points; a list of 
current service locations for Independent Access Providers may be found at 
http://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fm-gp/rec/licence-permis/IAP-FAI-eng.html   

It is recommended that you contact the applicable Independent Access Provider 
to confirm the availability of licences and service prior to your departure. If 
you are a non-resident wishing to fish for halibut in Areas 23, 121, or 123, 
you must acquire a licence through one of these Independent Access Providers in 
Canada. 

Refunds will not be issued for licences purchased online, so please ensure your 
licence selection - and date of licence, including the fishing year - is 
correct before you complete your transaction.  

After your fishing trip, please retain your licence and catch details, as you 
may be contacted for a recreational catch survey.

Mandatory Recording of Catch:

Whilst having a displayable electronic copy of your licence on your mobile 
device is a modern convenience applicable for some species of recreational 
fishing, please note that you MUST have a PAPER copy of your licence if you 
wish to catch and retain the following species - halibut, chinook, and lingcod 
in Areas 12 to 19, 20-5 to 20-7 and 29-5. Catch for these species must be 
immediately recorded in ink on the paper copy of the licence. Fishery officers 
will not accept electronic catch records for purposes of the recording 
requirement. Recording your catch electronically does not fulfill the 
regulatory requirement to record your catch in ink on your paper licence.
