Area F Troll Update - August 1, 2017 CHINOOK The 2017 Area F troll chinook TAC is 108,500 pieces, and will be managed to the maximum 3.2% exploitation objective on WCVI chinook using an Effort / Harvest Relationship Management Tool. The troll fishery will close to retention of chinook on August 4, 2017 (FN0689). The estimated total catch to date is 84,300 chinook, which is 78% of the 2017 Area F Troll TAC. The total chinook validated to date is 78,046 pieces. The estimated harvest rate of WCVI chinook is 2.1% as estimated by fishing effort using the Effort Harvest Management Tool. Stock proportions of troll catch from DNA samples are as follows: Sample #1 - from 377 fish (30 vessel landings) caught between June 21 and July 3 - 28.5% South Thompson, 21.5% Upper Columbia Summer/Fall, 15.6% North & Central Oregon, 7.0% Coastal Washington, 4.1% WCVI, 1.1% Skeena and 0.0% Nass Sample #2 - from 546 (26 vessel landings) caught between June 26 and July 8 - 40.2% South Thompson, 15.3% Upper Columbia Summer/Fall, 12.6% North & Central Oregon, 7.4% Coastal Washington, 2.5% WCVI, 2.0% Skeena and 0.0% Nass Sample #3 - from 307 fish (20 vessel landings) caught between July 7 and 14 - 36.5% South Thompson, 22.6% Upper Columbia Summer/Fall, 17.7% North & Central Oregon, 8.6% Coastal Washington, 2.6% WCVI, 0.7% Skeena and 0.0% Nass COHO, PINK The Dixon Entrance targeted coho fishery opened July 10, 2017 (FN0590). The current catch is estimated to be 218,000 coho and 24,000 pink. Average coho CPUE has remained over 110 coho per vessel per day since the opening on July 10. Observed coho CPUE has remained very high and well above the decadal average to date. Area 3 Coho The Nisga'a Lisims Government monitors Nass River coho abundance in-season using fishwheels. The department will be reviewing returns of coho past the fishwheels in the coming week to determine if run strength of coho in Area 3 is sufficient for a troll opening. Central Coast Limited Entry Coho Demonstration Fishery This fishery is scheduled to open on August 1 (FN0723) until August 31, 2017 with a restricted number of vessels permitted to operate in Areas 6 to 8. Area F Harvest Committee members assisted the department with random selections of applicants on July 6. Vessels permitted to participate in this demonstration fishery are listed in FN0723.
