FN0584-COMMERCIAL - Salmon: Gill Net - Area E - Area 29 - Fraser River Sockeye Demonstration Pool Fisheries
As outlined in the draft 2017 South Coast Integrated Fisheries Management Plan (IFMP) for salmon, the Department is continuing to explore the option of pooling arrangements for low effort (participation) fisheries at specified harvest amounts of Fraser sockeye when available Total Allowable Catch (TAC) levels are insufficient for a full fleet fishery to occur. All Area E gill net vessel owners/licence eligibility holders are eligible to voluntarily sign up for a pool. A minimum of 5 licences per pool are required for participation in the demonstration fishery; these pools will be used for any Area E demonstration fishery opening for sockeye in 2017. Only the designated fishing vessel within each pool will be issued quota and be eligible to harvest fish in the demonstration pool fishery. Those who do not sign up to participate in a pool will not be eligible to harvest in any sockeye demonstration pool fishery opening that may occur in 2017. Guidelines and additional information, including Area E demonstration pool fishery forms are available on the DFO website at: http://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fm-gp/licence-permis/licence-commercial-eng.html In order to accommodate pre-season planning timelines, vessel owners/licence eligibility holders are strongly encouraged to obtain their demonstration fishery package as soon as possible. Please note that the deadline for submitting all 2017 Area E demonstration pool fishery forms is Tuesday, July 25. All registration forms must be submitted to Barbara Mueller, Resource Manager, Fraser Interior Area by this deadline; forms received after the deadline will not be eligible for participation in Area E 2017 demonstration pool fisheries. The list of designated vessels eligible to participate in the 2017 demonstration pool fisheries will be announced by Fishery Notice following the July 25, 2017 deadline and prior to a fishery opening. Harvest plans will be consistent with objectives to protect stocks of concern and allocation priorities outlined in the South Coast Salmon Integrated Fisheries Management Plan (IFMP). Demonstration fisheries may be curtailed or may not proceed subject to conservation constraints, including concerns for by- catch of other species. Recorded updates for Area E fleet are available at (604) 666-2828. FOR MORE INFORMATION: Barbara Mueller, Resource Manager (Fraser River) - Delta (604)666-2370
