FN0453-YUKON/TBR - RECREATIONAL Salmon - Stikine and Taku Rivers - 2017 Chinook Salmon Forecasts, Daily Quota Reductions, and Closures

Stikine River (drainage):

The preseason forecast for Stikine River large Chinook salmon is 18,300,
slightly above the escapement target of 17,400. A forecast of this magnitude
provides for limited harvest opportunity. As a result, the Stikine River
(including tributaries) daily recreational quotas for Chinook salmon are
reduced to 0 (zero) fish over 65 cms and 2 (two) fish 65 cms or less effective
April 01, 2017 until further notice. Additionally, the Tahltan River will be
closed to recreational salmon fishing effective June 01 to August 31, 2017.

Taku River (drainage):

The preseason forecast for Taku River large Chinook salmon is 13,300, which is
well below the escapement target of 25,500. A forecast of this magnitude does
not provide for any directed harvest opportunity. As a result, the Taku River
(including tributaries) daily recreational quotas for Chinook salmon are
reduced to 0 (zero) fish over 65 cms and 2 (two) fish 65 cms or less effective
April 01, 2017 until further notice. Additionally, the Nakina River will be
closed to recreational salmon fishing effective July 20 to August 15, 2017 and
Tatsatua Creek will be closed to salmon fishing effective August 20 to
September 15, 2017.

The daily quota reductions and area closures are necessary to ensure that the
escapement objectives for Chinook salmon in the Stikine and Taku rivers are
achieved. Further restrictions or liberalizations are subject to inseason
information.
