FN0329-ABORIGINAL and COMMERCIAL - Herring - Roe: Area 2 - Haida Gwaii - Update April 4, 2017
Haida Gwaii Herring Update #8 2017 04 04 TEST CHARTER The Test Charter Queens Reach has concluded the sounding charter for 2017 and departed the area on April 2. HERRING SPAWN SURVEY The Recon Charter vessel Haida Guardian is currently anchored in Dolomite Narrows and holding out through very poor weather. The major spawn commenced late last week and has progressed from Scudder Creek along the north shore of Burnaby Island and into Burnaby Strait. The Dive Charter vessel Haida Spirit is expected to depart for Burnaby Island and commence spawn surveys along the north shore of Burnaby Island once the current spawn finishes and the water clears. The Area 2W Spawn Survey vessel Atlas arrived in Port Louis late last week, however no spawn was observed. The Port Louis spawn is late this year as the mean spawning date observed for Port Louis herring is March 25 (2004-2016). The Atlas also sounded approximately 2000 tons of herring off of Celestial Bluffs in Port Chanal over the weekend however no spawn was observed. The Atlas is continuing south and ends the charter on Wednesday April 5. It is unlikely that there will be any spawn information collected for 2017 due to late spawning and poor weather. TOTAL SEASON SOUNDING RESULTS: NOTE: Sounding information is not a complete representation of herring biomass and only represents a subjective estimate of what was observed by the test vessel.
