North Coast Herring Update March 30, 2017: Area 5 - Kitkatla The 2017 Herring seine fishery is complete in Area 5. The preliminary validated catch total is 1123.631 tons. Area 4 - Big Bay The 2017 Herring fishery by gill net is complete in Area 4. The preliminary validated catch total is 1541.114 tons. Dive Survey - Royal Pride: March 27 Dive team surveyed from Trenham pt. toward Tree bluff: Spotty vegetation between Trenham and Tree Bluff, had between 1/2 to 2 layers with a spawn width of 90 m. to 400 m. First transect at tree bluff 800 m. Spawn width good layers Ave 3 with up to 5 layers and an average of 1 layer on macro. Comments: Initial observations suggest an above average spawn for this particular area. March 28 Simpson pt. to Trenham pt. good coverage 1 to 4 layers with a spawn width 90m to 400m. Ongoing diving at tree bluff completed one more transect south of spit at tree bluff 1300 m with a spawn width of 180m. Macrocystis bed: averaged a layer on macro and understory Definitions: Scratches - Herring present in small schools 1 to 2 tons Skimmer - Herring spread out near the surface, difficult to quantify Fish on bottom (FOB) - Herring too close to the bottom to quantify NFF - No Fish Found Washed out spawn - Spawn that is coming to an end Miles - Means nautical miles for this bulletin ROE TEST CODE: Date;Location;roe yield;fish size;males:females;#1-#2-#3- #spawned-#juvenile;(roe weight g:fish weight g) FOR MORE INFORMATION: Karen Kimura-Miller 250-627-3020 Corey Martens 250-600-0392
