ROE HERRING INFORMATION BULLETIN: 34

DATE: March 27, 2017

The herring stock biological sampling and sounding assessment program in the 
Strait of Georgia has concluded for the 2017 season. The spawn dive survey and 
flights will continue for the next week to 10 days. 

The seine fishery in the Strait of Georgia closed March 16. Catch estimate is 
9,695 tons of the 13,013 ton quota.

The roe herring gill net fishery has been open since March 4. Catch estimate is 
10,070 tons of the 15,171 ton quota. 

There was a flight March 27 from Nanaimo north to Cape Lazo, and then south to 
Ladysmith Harbour. 2.0 patchy spawn observed at Qualicum Beach which was 
reported to have started March 26. Also 2.4 medium narrow spawn from Boyle 
Point to Repulse Point in Lower Baynes Sound (new area of spawn) The next spawn 
flight is planned for Wednesday March 29th. Total miles of spawn observed to 
date is approximately 49 NM.

The 2017 herring fishery notices will no longer be issued daily for the 
remainder of the season, however; will be posted if there is new spawn or 
fishery information.
