ROE HERRING INFORMATION BULLETIN: 33

DATE: March 25, 2017

The herring stock biological sampling and sounding assessment program in the 
Strait of Georgia has concluded for the 2017 season. The spawn dive survey and 
flights will continue for the next week to 10 days. 

The seine fishery in the Strait of Georgia closed March 16. Catch estimate is 
9,695 tons of the 13,013 ton quota.

The roe herring gill net fishery has been open since March 4, and is not 
currently active. Catch estimate is 10,070 tons of the 15,171 ton quota. 

There was a flight March 25 from Nanaimo north to Tree Island, and then south 
to Yellow Point, and Gabriola Island. 0.4 NM spawn medium and washed spawn at 
Komas Bluff was observed on the flight. The next spawn flight is planned for 
Monday March 27, weather permitting. Total miles of spawn observed to date is 
approximately 47 NM.

The 2017 herring fishery notices will no longer be issued daily for the 
remainder of the season, however; will be posted if there is new spawn or 
fishery information.
