FN0269-AQUACULTURE - Shellfish - Integrated Geoduck Management Framework - 2017
Fisheries and Oceans has now finalized the Integrated Geoduck Management Framework (IGMF). The Integrated Geoduck Management Framework is available online at: http://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/aquaculture/management-gestion/2017/geoduck- panope/geoduck-panope-igmf-cgip-2017-eng.html. Geoduck aquaculture as outlined in the IGMF represents an opportunity to diversify the economies of coastal and Indigenous communities in British Columbia while maintaining the economic prosperity and long-term sustainability of the wild geoduck fishery. In developing the IGMF, DFO considered input from consultations with First Nations, industry, stakeholders and the Province of BC as well as scientific advice on potential disease, genetic and ecological risks associated with the expansion of geoduck aquaculture. After this very lengthy process, DFO will now consider geoduck aquaculture applications on a coast-wide basis. The Department is now working with the Province of BC on harmonizing application and approval processes for new geoduck aquaculture applications. Front Counter BC is now in the position to accept new geoduck aquaculture applications. Application details will be provided on the Province of BC's Front Counter website and updated maps are available on our website at http://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/aquaculture/management-gestion/2017/geoduck- panope/maps-cartes-eng.html. Should you have any questions or concerns that you wish to discuss with Fisheries and Oceans in regards to the Framework, please contact ShellfishAquaculture.XPAC@dfo-mpo.gc.ca.
