North Coast Herring Update
March 22, 2017: 
Area 5 - Kitkatla
The charter vessel Franciscan No. 1 continued sounding in Kitkatla yesterday.  
A biomass of fish was sounded near Gurd Point, and they were able to perform a 
test set. 

The seine fleet is requested to proceed to the area as a fishery could be 
announced on grounds at short notice.

Soundings:

March 21 - Morning:
East side Gurd Island: 1500-1600 tons
Top of Gurd to Absolom: small scratch schools and body of fish on bottom

March 21 - Afternoon:
West side of Gurd Island: estimated 300 tons
Snass Point to Kitkatla Creek: light skimmer along the beach

Total: Estimated 2000+ tons in the area. 

Roe Test:
March 22;Gurd Point; 10.5%; 20.2cm; 43:48; 43-3-2-0-0; (24.41g:110.17g)
Comments: still blood in roe, males starting to soften

March 21; Gurd Point; 10.8%; 20.3cm; 39:47; 42-3-1-0-0; (25.6g:116.32g)

March 20; Near Dries Inlet; 9.7%; 20.4cm; 46:41, 35-5-1-0-0; (27.59g:114.55g)

Area 4 - Big Bay

The 2017 Herring fishery by gill net closed as of March 21. The quota has been 
met. See Fishery Notice FN0246 for details.

Spawn Flight March 21, 2017
Mist Island: small spawn
Burnt Cliff Island: spawn along the western shore advancing along the southern 
tip
South Island: Spawn along western shore
Pearl Harbour: Medium school holding along the bar on the eastern shore of 
Burnt Cliff Island
Haycock Island: Small broken schools holding north in the shallows
Belletti Point to Shattock Point: spot spawns.  Fish holding in the small bay 
south of the point.
Swallow Island: spot spawn
Curlew Rock: spot spawn
Continuous spawn from West Base in Big Bay south to Swamp Island.  Small broken 
schools holding outside the active spawn.

Large schools holding in the shallows south of Swamp Island and north of Ryan 
Point.

Total Spawn to Date: 17.63km

Definitions:
Scratches - Herring present in small schools 1 to 2 tons
Skimmer - Herring spread out near the surface, difficult to quantify
Fish on bottom (FOB) - Herring too close to the bottom to quantify
NFF - No Fish Found
Washed out spawn - Spawn that is coming to an end
Miles - Means nautical miles for this bulletin
