North Coast Herring Update March 19, 2017: Area 4 - Big Bay Fishing continues. See Fishery Notice FN0228 for details. A flight was conducted on March 19 and observed small schools in the shallows on the western shore of Burnt Cliff Island. Small and Medium schools observed in Big Bay along the shores of Belletti Point, Salmon Bight, and Simpson Point west to Trenham Point. The spawn has advanced south of Tree Bluff and into Big Bay to Reeks Point. Large schools of fish sounded and observed on the outside of Tree Bluff and in Big Bay. The large body of fish that was set on March 17 has moved and cannot be located by the test vessel. They plan to expand their target sounding area in attempts to locate a biomass to take a sample from. No new test sets have been performed. No spawn has been reported. Assessment continues. The seine fleet is requested to stay out of the area until advised otherwise.
