North Coast Herring Update
March 17, 2017: 

Area 4 - Big Bay
An overflight is scheduled for this morning.  A more detailed report will be 
sent out as a Fishery Notice later today.

Area 5 - Kitkatla

The charter vessel Franciscan No. 1 continued sounding in Kitkatla yesterday.  
No spawn has been reported. Strong winds are hampering assessment operations.  
Assessment continues.  The seine fleet is requested to stay out of the area 
until advised otherwise.

Roe Test:
March 16; Red Can Cove; 8.4%; 20.4cm; 49:38; 31-4-3-38-49;(27.48g:115.79g)

West of Gurd Island -------------- Mar 16, 500 tons; two schools
Kitkatla Inlet ------------------- Mar 16, NFF
Porcher Peninsula to Gravel Pit -- Mar 16, Scratches, FOB
Porcher Penn to Robert Is -------- Mar 16, 75 tons
Robert Island to Gurd Island ----- Mar 16, NFF

Area 5 (Estimated) Total           500+ tons in whole area

Definitions:
Scratches - Herring present in small schools 1 to 2 tons
Skimmer - Herring spread out near the surface, difficult to quantify
Fish on bottom (FOB) - Herring too close to the bottom to quantify
NFF - No Fish Found
Washed out spawn - Spawn that is coming to an end
Miles - Means nautical miles for this bulletin
