North Coast Herring Update
March 16, 2017: 

Area 4 - Big Bay

The charter vessel Nita Maria continues sounding operations today.  Significant 
bird life has been observed close to the beach, between Tree Bluff and Swamp 
Islands. They will be conducting an overflight this afternoon.  A more detailed 
report will be posted later today.   


Area 5 - Kitkatla

The charter vessel Franciscan No. 1 continued sounding in Kitkatla yesterday 
and performed a test set this morning.  No spawn has been reported. Strong 
winds are hampering assessment operations.  Assessment continues.  The seine 
fleet is requested to stay out of the area until advised otherwise.

Mid Channel ---------------------- Mar 15, 2 40 ton schools on bottom
Nubble Point --------------------- Mar 15, 2 small haystacks on bottom
Freeman Passage ------------------ Mar 15, Fish on Bottom
Absalom Island ------------------- Mar 14, Fish on Bottom
Gravel Pit to Robert Island ------ Mar 14, 20 tons
Porcher Peninsula ---------------- Mar 15, 2 schools; total 175 tons
Gurd Point to Rocky Bay ---------- Mar 14, 1 small school 

Area 5 (Estimated) Total           400 tons in whole area

Definitions:
Scratches - Herring present in small schools 1 to 2 tons
Skimmer - Herring spread out near the surface, difficult to quantify
Fish on bottom (FOB) - Herring too close to the bottom to quantify
NFF - No Fish Found
Washed out spawn - Spawn that is coming to an end
Miles - Means nautical miles for this bulletin
