TOTAL STRAIT OF GEORGIA: Assessment underway

The seine fishery in lower Baynes Sound opened yesterday at 07:30 hours and 
continued last night and this morning in lower Baynes Sound.  Catch estimate 
for today so far is 370 tons; catch estimate from yesterday is 1,700 tons. It 
is anticipated that the fishery will resume tonight as the weather abates and 
fish come off the bottom, and the fishery will remain open if the fish quality 
is good and pools want to continue to fish. The seine fishery was also open 
March 9, catch estimate is approximately 1,300 tons; March 8, 3,200 tons; and 
March 6, 2,600 tons. The total seine fishery catch estimate on hails and 
validations is approximately 9,000 tons of the 13,013 ton quota.

The roe herring gill net fishery has been open since March 4. The catch for the 
gill net fishery is 8,200 tons of the 15,171 ton quota. 

The test vessel Denman Isle assessed Nanaimo area, Northumberland Channel, 
Stuart Channel, Yellow Point, and is assessing Pylades today and outside 
Gabriola. Limited stocks have been located in these areas. The Denman Isle will 
assess Sabine Channel and over to Powell River over next few days before 
returning to Area 14 and ending the charter south of Nanaimo next weekend.   

Spawn flight is this morning at 08:00 hours, Nanaimo to Shelter Point, and 
included Lasquiti Island and Dodd Narrows. The only spawn observed has been 
Willimar to Lazo 1.9 NM light and washed out, 1.2 Kitty Coleman, washed out. 
Total miles of spawn to date are 34 NM. There is a spawn flight planned for 
tomorrow morning. The dive assessment teams on the vessels Ocean Cloud and 
Viking Spirit will commence the dive survey program in the next several days.
