There are five test vessels assessing the area from Cape Lazo to Nanaimo today for seine fishery set up and sample collection. There have been significant stocks observed from Miracle Beach to Cape Lazo last night and this morning. Pursuant to Pacifc Region Close Time Variation Order number 2017-HS-GULF-01 PFMA 14-1 To 14-13 and 14-15 are open to roe herring fishing by means of purse seine until further notice. Set approvals and fishing will be undertaken in PFMA 14-13, in the area from Cape Lazo to Little River. The roe herring gill net fishery opened at 11:00 hours on March 4, 2017 in portions of Areas 14 and 17 from Shelter Point to Horsewell Bluff Northerly of Nanaimo including Hornby and Denman Islands. Comox Harbour, Nanoose Bay, and Nanaimo Harbour are closed to gill net fishing. The catch estimate is 4,200 tons of the 15,171 ton quota with approximately 80 skiffs fishing. The fishery continues between the Big Q and Parksville Bay. Reports are that fishing rate has slowed this morning but spawn has expanded. Spawn flight today observed 19.2 NM spawn from NW Bay to Mapleguard Pt. The spawn was heavy at NW Bay to Brandt Pt, and lighter through Parksville Bay to French Creek; medium to heavy from French Creek through Columbia Beach with lighter spawning starting in Qualicum beach. Little Qualicum to Bowser; medium to heavy with very heavy spawning between Bowser and Mapleguard Pt. There will be a spawn flight tomorrow at 09:00 hours, weather permitting.
