The roe herring gill net fishery opened at 11:00 hours on March 4 in portions of Areas 14 and 17 from Shelter Point to Horsewell Bluff Northerly of Nanaimo including Hornby and Denman Islands. Comox Harbour, Nanoose Bay, and Nanaimo Harbour are closed to gill net fishing. The catch estimate is 1,900 tons of the 15,171 ton quota with approximately 80 skiffs fishing. The fishery continues between the Big Q and Parksville Bay. Reports are that fishing rate has slowed this morning but spawn has expanded. There was a seine pool captains meeting yesterday in French Creek, and the testing program, fish distribution, and fishery opening procedures were reviewed. When test results in fish of acceptable quality are located, fishery opening including setting vessels and fishing area will be set up with the pool captains. The target time for opening the fishery is within two hours from the time of the consensus opening request. There are five test vessels assessing the area from Cape Lazo to Nanaimo today for seine fishery set up and sample collection. There have been stocks observed off Miracle Beach, Komas Bluff, North of Hornby Island, and at Northwest Bay, however a seine fishing opportunity has not been identified. The spawn overflight yesterday observed 1.8 NM of spawn from Parksville Bay to French Creek, and 3.7 NM of spawn from Little Qualicum River to Big Qualicum River. Spawn flight today observed 13 NM of spawn from Brant Point to Nile Creek, medium to heavy intensity with no spawn in Craig Bay or Qualicum Beach. Total miles of spawn to date, observed from the flights is 13.7 NM. There is a spawn flight tomorrow at 09:00 hours, weather permitting. Total miles of spawn to date observed from the flights is 13.7 NM. ROE TEST CODE:Date;Location;roe yield;fish size;males:females;#1-#2-#3-#spawned- #juvenile;(roe weight gm:fish weight gm)
