The open area for this fishery includes the foreshore of Vancouver Island from Shelter Point to Horsewell Bluff Northerly of Nanaimo including Hornby and Denman Islands. Comox Harbour, Nanoose Bay, and Nanaimo Harbour are closed to fishing and will remain closed for the duration of the fishery. This opening has been sanctioned by the designated HIAB representative and is based on two miles of spawn in the area of Parksville Bay and Qualicum Bay. The DFO gill net manager is Terry Palfrey. Catch reporting pool captains will be contacted on a daily basis between 10 and 11 AM during the fishery to report fishing activities and catch information. In the event the fishery moves into the Baynes Sound area, fishermen are reminded that there are numerous clam and oyster leases in Baynes Sound. Fishermen are advised that it is unlawful to fish on a lease without the lease holder's permission. Once the fishery is opened it will remain open until further notice and is not expected to close during the night or during poor weather conditions. The fishery will close when the overall catch target has been reached or after a reasonable fishing opportunity has been provided. As much notice as possible will be given prior to the closure of the fishery. There is a licence requirement to weigh all fish on the grounds. Packer vessel masters will be contacted by their catch reporting pool captain to obtain updated catch information on deliveries received to date which must be recorded separately by licenced pool. Packer vessel masters are also required to notify JO Thomas prior to departing the area. A confirmation number is legally required before offloading commences. All herring offloaded must be verified by an observer. This is a mandatory licence condition for transporting roe herring. There was a spawn overflight which departed Nanaimo at 11:00 hours this morning and covered Nanaimo to Shelter Point, Cape Lazo, Denman and Hornby Islands, Baynes Sound and the Vancouver Island shore to Nanoose. 1.8 NM of heavy to light spawn from Parksville Bay to French Creek.
