TOTAL STRAIT OF GEORGIA: Assessment underway

The DFO charter test vessel "Denman Isle" and herring industry test
vessel "Viking Cavalier" have been assessing Area 14 over the past several
days. There is a large biomass of fish in the EC of Denman Island area between
Komas Bluff and Cape Lazo in the Horseshoe, and also NE of Hornby Island. There
was a test set yesterday on fish just to the East of Comox bar on the outside
of the bar; they were 6.5% 19.2cm. Also another large body of fish was sounded
NE of Hornby Island, the test of these fish in the morning was 5.3% 20.2cm, and
later in the evening and SE of that location 6.5% 19.2 cm. A few small
scratches have been seen in Baynes Sound. Weather is hampering assessment
today.

There is a confirmed light spawn reported this morning above Cape Lazo,
approximately 0.7 nautical miles in the area of Kin Beach to Little River.
There is a spawn overflight planned to depart Nanaimo at 09:00 hours tomorrow.
Weather forecast is winds southeast 20 to 30 knots increasing to southeast 30
to 35 late this afternoon then diminishing to southeast 15 to 25 near midnight.
The Baynes Sound cable ferry the "Baynes Sound Connector" is in operation and
vessels transiting the area are reminded to follow the protocol for crossing
the cable corridor.
