The DFO charter test vessel Denman Isle commenced the sample and assessment
program in the Strait of Georgia on Feb 20, and has been assessing areas 14 and
17 North. The herring industry test vessel Viking Cavalier was assessing on
Feb 22 and 23, and will be back on charter starting today. The largest biomass
of fish has been sounded in the EC of Denman area between the Komas Bluff and
Cape Lazo in the Horseshoe. There were no tests samples available from the sets
made last night or this morning, however there are still an estimated 35,000
tons in the EC of Denman area. There are plans to sample and test these fish
again tonight with three vessels assisting. A few small scratches have been
seen in Baynes Sound, and no significant stocks located between Parksville and
Deep Bay. There was 3,000 tons located in the area above Cape Lazo at Oyster
River Feb 26, and weather hampered assessment. The Baynes Sound cable ferry
the "Baynes Sound Connector" is in operation and vessels transiting the area
are reminded to follow the protocol for crossing the cable corridor.
