The DFO charter test vessel Denman Isle commenced the sample and assessment
program in the Strait of Georgia on Feb 20, and has been assessing areas 14 and
17 North this week. The herring industry test vessel Viking Cavalier was
assessing on Feb 22 and 23, and is standing down until herring roe maturity
increases. The largest biomass of fish has been sounded in the EC of Denman
area between the Komas Bluff and Cape Lazo in the Horseshoe. There was a test
last night at Komas Bluff, the fish were 19.6cm and 1.1%, with 35,000 tons in
the EC of Denman area. There are plans to sample and test these fish again
tonight. A few small scratches have been seen in Baynes Sound, and no
significant stocks located between Parksville and Deep Bay. There have been
herring located in the area above Cape Lazo up to Oyster River earlier in the
week, however weather is hampering assessment of this area today. The
management vessel CCGC Neocaligus is assessing S Hornby Island and Lambert
Channel. There is no spawn overflight scheduled for the next several days. The
Baynes Sound cable ferry the "Baynes Sound Connector" has been out of service
for several days, however is expected to resume operations today.
