The DFO charter test vessel Denman Isle commenced the sample and assessment
program in the Strait of Georgia on Feb 20, and has been assessing areas 14 and
17 North this week. The herring industry test vessel Viking Cavalier was
assessing on Feb 22 and 23, and is standing down until herring roe maturity
increases in a few days. The largest biomass of fish has been sounded in the
area between the NE side of Denman Island and Cape Lazo in the Horseshoe. There
are plans to sample and test these fish tonight or tomorrow morning. There
also have been herring located in the area above Cape Lazo up to Oyster River.
There was a test set this morning in Northwest Bay on an estimated 2,000 tons,
the fish were 19.0cm and less than 1% #1 roe. The management vessel CCGC
Neocaligus is assessing Baynes Sound area, with a few small scratches in Upper
Baynes Sound. There is no spawn overflight scheduled for the next several
days. The Baynes Sound cable ferry the "Baynes Sound Connector" has been out
of service for several days however, is expected to resume operations Sunday
Feb 26.
