The DFO charter test vessel Denman Isle commenced the 27 day charter sample and assessment program in the Strait of Georgia on Feb 20, 2017, and assessed from Nanaimo to Hornby Island, Lambert Channel, EC Denman Island and the Horsehoe, and Baynes Sound. One test was undertaken Feb 20 from 3,000 tons off Komass Bluff NE of Denman Island, less than 1%. More herring seem to be in the Komas to Horsehsoe area this morning, however the test had zero percentage with no #1 roe. The first herring industry test vessel Viking Cavalier started assessment this morning and is in the Nanoose to French Creek area today and tonight. Assessment and tonnage estimates are incomplete. The management vessel CCGC Neocaligus will be on grounds February 22. There was a spawn overflight conducted on February 21 from Nanaimo to Oyster River, no spawn observed, sea lions at Norris Rock, Komas Bluff, and above Cape Lazo to Oyster River.
