FN0109-2017 WCVI Herring Stock Assessment Program -Update #1.
There have been 2 herring spawns detected to date on the West Coast of Vancouver Island: Area 23 Barkley Sound Feb 13 - Salmon Beach approximately 2 miles Area 24 Clayoquot Sound Jan 30 - Hesquiat Harbour approximately 3.25 miles Area 25 Nootka Sound No spawn observed Area 25 Esperanza Inlet No spawn observed The test vessel selected to collect biological samples for herring stock assessment in 2017 is the F/V Proud Canadian with skipper Philip Dupuis. This seine vessel will collect whole herring under scientific licence throughout the major stock assessment area (Areas 23-25) for 20 days in 2017. No fish will be retained for sale. The test vessel Proud Canadian is scheduled to arrive in Barkley Sound on February 20,weather permitting. A vessel based dive team aboard the F/V Canadian Shore with Skipper Paul Bevandick is scheduled to begin dive surveys throughout the major stock assessment area(Areas 23-25) for 15 days in 2017. The Canadian Shore is scheduled to begin surveys March 5. A shore based dive team aboard the Seaveyor 1 with skipper Darren Horler is scheduled to begin dive surveys along the East and West Coast of Vancouver island throughout the major stock assessment areas (Areas 23-25, 27, SOG) for 20 days. The shore based dive survey crew is scheduled to begin surveys February 20. First Nation contractors will conduct herring spawn reconnaissance, supplemental surface spawn surveys and FSC catch monitoring on the west coast of Vancouver Island in: Area 23-15 days Area 24-30 days Area 25-15 days For more information please contact Eamon Miyagi (250)286-5896
