Fishery Notice

Area E gill nets open from 07:00 hours to 19:00 hours Saturday October 24, 2015 
and also open from 07:00 hours to 19:00 hours Sunday October 25, 2015 in Area 
21 and a portion of Subarea 121 inside a line from Pachena Point to a position 
2.0 nautical miles true south of Pachena Point, then to a position 2.0 nautical 
miles true south of Bonilla Point and then to Bonilla Point.

The Cheewhat stream mouth boundary and the Klanawa River 0.5 nautical mile 
radius boundaries are in effect. The target stock is Nitinat chum; pinks may 
also be retained.

Sockeye, coho, chinook and steelhead may not be retained. Minimum mesh 149 mm, 
maximum depth 90 meshes, maximum hang ratio 3:1, corkline to web distance 
minimum 0 metres, maximum 2.0 metres.  Alaska Twist and or Multi-strand web may 
be used. 

Be advised that the October 25th opening may be reduced or cancelled if the 
fleet size is greater than 75 vessels on the October 24 opening.

This fishery is being managed with a fixed-harvest rate strategy by limiting 
effort. The harvest rate for this fishery is in the range of about 25% which is 
consistent with the current IFMP. If the fleet size is below 75 vessels a 
second opening will occur on the following day. Weekly cap is 120 boat days. 
The department will review catch, brood stock collection, observed lake 
abundance and abundance in river to determine if further commercial fishing 
opportunities are warranted. 

Area E catch to date is approximately 110,000. Area B catch to date is 
approximately 50,000.  

A conference call with Area B and E harvest committee advisors will be arranged 
for Sunday October 25 at 20:00 hours to review escapement and fishing results. 
If abundance is adequate, commercial fisheries will be announced on short 
notice. 

It is imperative that fishermen report into FOS prior to fishing and after each 
fishing day. Failure to do so will limit fishing opportunities.

Please note that all Salmon gill net fisheries have new requirements for 
recording and reporting.  Refer to your 2015/2016 conditions of licence for 
complete changes.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada is interested in reports of sea turtles in BC 
waters.  By documenting sightings we are able to learn more about how, when, 
and where these turtles are using our waters.  If you see a sea turtle, please 
call this toll-free phone number: 1-866-I SAW ONE (1-866-472-9663).  Please 
include information such as the type of sea turtle seen (i.e. leatherback), the 
location, and time of sighting. 

Fishers are requested to avoid fishing among birds and not to run the line if 
birds are near the net.  Fishers are requested to retain all dead birds which 
are entangled and to release live and unharmed birds by placing them in the 
water.  Please check all birds for metal bird bands (rings) on the leg.  If a 
bird is banded please contact Laurie Wilson with the band number and capture 
date and location at 1 866-431-2473 (BIRD) or by the email below.  Handle birds 
with gloves, double bag dead birds and label each bird with date, time, and 
location and store them on ice.  Please call your local patrol vessel to 
organize pick-up or drop them off at a local DFO office.  Alternatively, please 
send photographs of birds with a reference object such as a coin, and the date, 
time and location to laurie.wilson@ec.gc.ca.  Your names and vessel names do 
not need to be identified or included.
