Fishery Notice

The pre-season forecasted Conuma chinook terminal return is 42,000. At this run 
size the Area D Gillnet TAC would be approximately 14,000. The first in-season 
re-forecast will be available August 6th and a Fishery Notice will be posted on 
August 7th. If the re-forecast is in the "Abundant" range (>40,000) the first 
full fleet opening will be August 11th. Lower re-forecasts would result in 
either an opening on August 18th, later, or none at all if less than 15,000.

The pre-season expectation is that almost half the return will be composed of 
small 3 year old males. In order to catch the full TAC and meet egg targets for 
the hatchery and the river, harvesters are encouraged to use smaller mesh nets 
to target the abundant small males and avoid the larger females. For 2015, 
maximum 90 mesh deep gillnets will be permitted to a maximum mesh size of 159 
mm (6.25"). In addition, the typical larger mesh Chinook gillnets will be 
permitted with a minimum mesh size of 171 mm (6.75") and a maximum depth of 60 
meshes. All gillnets will be a maximum of 183 m long (600'), a maximum hang 
ratio of 3:1, and a cork-line to web distance minimum of 0 cm and maximum of 
2.0 m. 

As agreed to by the Area 25 Roundtable, a limited effort gillnet fishery is 
planned for August 9th with a preliminary catch target of 1,000 fish. This 
catch target could change from 750 to 1,250 and will be reviewed based on the 
August 6th in-season re-forecast. At run sizes of less than 30,000 the limited 
effort fishery will be cancelled. The total number of vessels permitted to 
participate is 6. There will be special gear and catch reporting requirements 
for this fishery. 

Area D licence holders wishing to participate in the limited effort fishery 
should contact Barry Crow, Area D Harvest Committee member for details and to 
apply. Applications must state clearly the vessel name, CFV, vessel operator's 
name, net type to be used, and vessel operator's telephone number. Applications 
to participate may be hand delivered, text-messaged, e-mailed, or mailed to 
Barry Crow. E-mail or text contact is preferred. Text and e-mail responses can 
be confirmed quickly.

Entries will be accepted until close of business Friday, July 24th. The draw 
will be held Monday July 27th at the DFO Office in Duncan. Results will be 
posted on the DFO Fishery Notice system Wednesday, July 29th.
