Fishery Notice

Since 2005, significant work has been undertaken by Fisheries and Oceans Canada 
(DFO) to develop an electronic solution for the collection, transmission and 
storage of fisheries logbook data.  The establishment of an electronic logbook 
(e-log) system has many direct benefits for both DFO and the fishing industry, 
including:

- Accurate and timely data reporting; 
- More effective quota management and information exchange;
- Reduction of data entry errors; 
- Reduction in administrative and logistical costs; 
- Enhanced ability to collect data from remote fisheries; and 
- Improved statistical analysis capacity and traceability. 

As existing e-log pilot programs have been successful in several commercial, 
recreational and First Nations fisheries, DFO is now advancing an initiative to 
expand the current commercial e-log program into a national integrated e-log 
program. This national e-log initiative will be implemented in a phased multi-
year approach, prioritized and aligned with the needs of both individual 
fisheries and the Department.

In preparation for the new e-log system, DFO will develop standards for e-log 
software, in partnership with the Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB), 
along with a process to certify e-logs software that meets these standards.  
The Canadian fishing industry will have an opportunity to be involved in the 
development of standards for e-logs software, through participation in the 
technical committee, and through a public consultation period.  


What does this mean for fishers in 2015?

DFO has begun the transition to a national system, and is no longer funding 
specific software programs previously available under the e-logs pilot 
programs.  If you are currently using e-log software, you must confirm with 
your DFO Fishery Manager that the e-log meets your licence conditions before 
you continue to use it. If you currently use paper logbooks, you may continue 
to do so.
