FN0403-YUKON/TBR - RECREATIONAL Salmon - Stikine and Taku Rivers - 2018 Chinook Salmon Forecasts, Daily Quota Reductions, and Area Closures
Stikine River (drainage): The preseason forecast for Stikine River large Chinook salmon is 6,900, well below the escapement target of 17,400 (range: 14,000-28,000). A forecast of this magnitude does not provide for any directed harvest opportunity. As a result, the Stikine River (including tributaries) daily recreational quotas for Chinook salmon are reduced to 0 (zero) fish over 65 cms and 0 (zero) fish 65 cms or less effective May 07, 2018 until further notice. Additionally, the Tahltan River will be closed to recreational salmon fishing effective June 01 to August 31, 2018. Taku River (drainage): The preseason forecast for Taku River large Chinook salmon is 4,700, which is well below the escapement target of 25,500 (range: 19,000-36,000). A forecast of this magnitude does not provide for any directed harvest opportunity. As a result, the Taku River (including tributaries) daily recreational quotas for Chinook salmon are reduced to 0 (zero) fish over 65 cms and 0 (zero) fish 65 cms or less effective May 07, 2018 until further notice. The portion of the Nakina River from the centre line to the northern bank, starting from a boundary sign located approximately 300 metres upstream of the Nakina and Sloko rivers confluence to a boundary sign located approximately 1300 metres upstream of the Nakina and Sloko rivers confluence will be closed to recreational salmon fishing effective April 01, 2018 to March 31, 2019. Additionally, the entire Nakina River will be closed to recreational salmon fishing effective July 20 to August 15, 2018 and Tatsatua Creek will be closed to salmon fishing effective August 20 to September 15, 2018. The daily quota reductions and area closures are necessary to ensure that Chinook salmon escapement is maximized in the Stikine and Taku rivers for 2018. Further restrictions or liberalizations are subject to inseason information.
