ROE HERRING INFORMATION BULLETIN: 42

STRAIT OF GEORGIA:
Effective 16:00 hours Tuesday March 29, the commercial roe herring gill net 
fishery in the Strait of Georgia will close. Pacific Region Close Time 
Variation Order number 2016-HS-GULF-01 made on March 6, 2016, and Pacific 
Region Close Time Variation Order Number 2016-HS-GULF-02 made on March 27, 
2016, are repealed. 

The roe herring gill net fishery in the Strait of Georgia opened in subareas 14-
1 to 14-13, 14-15, 17-10, 17-12, 17-13, 17-18, 17-19 and 17-21 at 10:30 hours 
March 6. On March 27, 2016, at 15:30 hours subareas 17-4, 17-16, and 17-17 also 
opened. Fishing effort and catch from the expanded area and spawning has now 
stopped. Total hailed and validated catch to date is 6,760 tons of the 11,571 
ton quota.

There was a spawn overflight at 08:00 hours today from Nanaimo to Dodd Narrows, 
Ladysmith Harbour, Upper Pylades, Upper Stuart, NE Gabriola and the VI shore as 
far up as Deep Bay.  Viewing conditions were good. No spawn was observed on the 
flight. 

59.3 nm of spawn was observed from the aircraft to date.  
The next flight is planned for the morning of Thursday March 31.

The sounding and biological sampling program was completed March 21, 2016. The 
dive vessel "Viking Spirit" is assessing the Big Qualicum River to Campbell 
River area over the next several days.

The roe herring seine fishery took place March 3 to 6 in Baynes Sound. The 
validated catch for the seine fishery is 8,407 tons, the quota was 8,374 tons.
