FN0216-COMMERCIAL - Herring - Roe - North Coast - Prince Rupert - March 20, 2016 Update
PRINCE RUPERT Area 4 - Big Bay Fishery Continues. A spawn flight was conducted on March 19. Spot spawns observed on the southern end of Finlayson with small schools holding tight to the beach on the western and eastern shores. Spawn continues along the western shores of Mist, Burnt Cliff, and South Island. Small broken schools observed in Pearl Harbour. SOK test in Pearl Harbour resulted in a 4% roe yield mixed with spawned out fish. No fish observed in Big Bay proper. Spawn observed from Tree Bluff south to Ryan Point with large schools observed holding outside of Slippery Rock, Swamp Island, and in the shallows in Duncan Bay. No spawn or fish observed around Tugwell Island. At this point in the fishery, 545 tons have been hailed off grounds. This morning spawn appears to be advancing around Ryan Point into Duncan Bay. Gear has shifted from Burnt Cliff south to Tree Bluff which suggests the spawn has tapered off around Pearl Harbour. Spawn is slowly turning the corner at Trenham Point, advancing east into Big Bay. Area 5 - Kitkatla The test vessel will remain in the Kitkatla Inlet area today, assessing several large bodies of fish located there. Assessments have been hampered by weather; no new test set.
