TOTAL STRAIT OF GEORGIA: Assessment underway

The roe herring gill net fishery in the Strait of Georgia opened March 6. There 
are 55-60 punts and their support vessels operating on the EC Denman Island and 
Hornby Island areas. Total hailed and validated catch to date is 3,800 tons of 
the 11,571 ton quota. 

The roe herring seine fishery was active March 3 to 6 in Baynes Sound. The 
hailed and validated catch for the seine fishery is at the 8,374 ton quota, and 
the fishery closed at 15:00 hours March 7.   

The spawn flight today observed 27 miles of spawn March 7:
10 mi EC Denman Whitespit south- washed out with heavy areas south end
On Hornby Island:
Ford Cove - 2 spot spawns
1 mi Shingle Spit to Phipps - light
1.5 mi Phipps to Shields - med
4 mi Shields to Whaling Station Bay - med
Tribune Bay - Spot Spawn
1.3 mi Goose Spit to Willimar - med

There will be a spawn assessment fight of Area 14 and 17N today weather 
permitting from Nanaimo to Shelter Point, leaving at 1300 hours, and the flight 
summary will be broadcast on 78A after the flight.  

The DFO charter seine vessel the "Denman Isle" continues to assess herring 
stocks in the Strait of Georgia and collect biological samples for herring 
stock assessment. The "Denman Isle" is operating under the authority of a DFO 
scientific licence, and fish are not retained for sale. The industry funded 
test vessel the "Viking Cavalier" will commence charter in Area 14 later 
today.
