Within the next few weeks, and after consultation with the commercial crab representatives, a questionnaire will be mailed to all eligible commercial and communal commercial crab licence holders in the Pacific Region. Vessel length licence restrictions, trap stacking, and hanging bait questions will be included along with some background information. The intent of this questionnaire is to gain input from commercial harvesters on potential management changes to the commercial crab fishery. Potential management changes will be evaluated against the management objectives further described in the 2015 Crab by Trap Integrated Fisheries Management Plan, (IFMP). Further consultation with First Nations and Recreational stakeholders may also take place. Any changes made could be made as early 2016 in conjunction with the next IFMP process. This year is also an area re-selection year for commercial crab harvesters. Once questionnaire feedback has been processed and any management changes have been evaluated and consulted upon, the area selection process will commence. Similar to past area selection processes, an area selection ballot will be mailed to all licence holders and results of licence holders per area will be posted by Fishery Notice. Another ballot will then be mailed out to give commercial harvesters a final opportunity to change the area their licence has been designated to fish in for the next fishing period, (typically every three years).
