FN1208-COMMERCIAL - Salmon: Gill Net - Area E - Area 18 - Chum Opening - November 5, 2014


The Cowichan River Didson escapement estimate total to date is approximately 
127,500 chum with an early forecasted return of 180,000-190,000 chum.  

The Gill Net fishery will open on November 5, 2014 for 12 hours, from 06:00 
hours to 18:00 hours in the following Areas and Subareas: 

A portion of Subarea 18-7 north-westerly of a line from Hatch Point on 
Vancouver Island, to Cape Keppel on Salt Spring Island and south-easterly from 
a line from a Boundary sign on Saltspring Island at 48 45.992'N      123 
33.777'W to a Boundary sign on Vancouver Island at 48 46.179'N        123 
34.654'W and from Separation Point on Vancouver Island to Cherry Point on 
Vancouver Island at 48 42.945'N 123 33.292'W.

There is a 1/2 mile radius boundary in effect at Cherry Point.

The minimum mesh size is 149 mm (5 and 7/8 in). The maximum net depth is 90 
meshes. The maximum hang ratio is 3:1. Corkline to web distance is minimum 0 cm 
maximum 2 m.

The target species in this fishery is chum salmon, the incidental catch of pink 
salmon may be retained in the areas open to fishing. There will be non-
retention of sockeye, coho, chinook, and steelhead.

All planned fisheries are subject to change with updated in-season assessment 
information and weather constraints. Harvesters should contact their Area 
Harvest Committee representatives for updated information. 


PLEASE NOTE:

At the end of each fishing day prior to 08:00 hours of the next day, the vessel 
master must, as a condition of licence, record their catch information in their 
Salmon Log Book and report their catch by calling AMR at 1-888-387-0007. 

Vessel masters must, prior to leaving for the fishing grounds, phone AMR at 1-
888-387-0007 and provide a start-fishing report and announce their intention to 
fish.

Within 24 hours of the end of a fishing trip and prior to commencing a 
subsequent fishing trip, the vessel master shall phone in an End Fishing Report 
by calling AMR at 1-888-387-0007. Should a vessel master decide not to fish 
after having obtained a Trip Identification Number, the vessel master shall 
phone in a Trip Cancellation Report. 

Gill net vessel masters are reminded that logbooks, operating revival tanks, 
and one hour set times are mandatory as condition of their licence and are 
legal requirements. 

Fishers are advised that a mandatory harvest log and catch reporting program is 
in place.  Start and end fishing reports are required.  Fishing reports are 
required for all fishing activity, even if no fish are caught.  Please refer to 
Area E Conditions of Licence for updated information. 

Fisheries and Oceans Canada is interested in reports of sea turtles in BC 
waters.  By documenting sightings we are able to learn more about how, when, 
and where these turtles are using our waters.  If you see a sea turtle, please 
call this toll-free phone number: 1-866-I SAW ONE (1-866-472-9663).  Please 
include information such as the type of sea turtle seen (i.e. leatherback), the 
location, and time of sighting. 

Environment Canada (EC) is monitoring seabird by-catch to determine potential 
impacts on bird populations under current fishing efforts.  Fishers are 
requested to submit all dead birds entangled in nets to EC for species 
confirmation and DNA analysis to determine the colony of origin. Please call 
your local DFO office or Patrol vessel to organize pick-up, or drop off of 
Carcasses.  Fishers can also contact EC directly by calling the EC Reporting 
Line 1-866-431-2473 (BIRD).  Label birds with date, time, location and vessel 
name (Skipper name isn't needed).  Handle birds with gloves, double bag dead
