FN1167-COMMERCIAL - Salmon: Seine, Gill Net and Troll - Areas 14 to 19 - Mid Vancouver Island Chum Update - October 23, 2014
Mid Vancouver Island Chum Update (Areas 14 to 19) Thursday October 23, 2014 Area 14 Escapement estimates to date are as follows: Puntledge River - 3,600 chum - Target Escapement 60,000. Big Qualicum River - 460 chum - Target Escapement 85,000. Little Qualicum River - 235 chum - Target Escapement 85,000. Assessment on the Puntledge, Little and Big Qualicum was incomplete and reported numbers are not for the entire system due to water conditions. All systems in Areas 14 to16 have high and murky water conditions. At this time no commercial fishing opportunities are anticipated in the upcoming week. Areas 15 and 16 No assessment information. Commercial fishing opportunities are not expected in 2014 due to low forecast levels of abundance. Areas 17, 18, and 19 Escapement estimates to date are as follows: Nanaimo River - 6,700 chum - Target Escapement 40,000. Chemainus River - 5 chum - Target Escapement 50,000. Cowichan River - 28,300 chum - Target Escapement 160,000. Goldstream River - 50 chum - Target Escapement 15,000. It is still early in the chum run timing. The Didson data for the Nanaimo has not been read and the escapement estimate is derived from a swim count and extrapolation. The Didson counter on the Cowichan River was taken out by debris during high water but has been re-installed. The 25,000 chum trigger on the Cowichan River for the Cowichan/Saanich Test Fishery has been reached but the Goldstream escapement is low at this time. The Test Fishery is tentatively set up to begin Tuesday October 28 pending a stream walk on the Goldstream on Monday October 27. Assessment continues. No commercial fisheries are anticipated for Area 17, 18 or 19 at this time. The next Mid Vancouver Island Chum Update will be Thursday October 30, 2014.
